Self Hosted Wordpress Installation

If you want to release the true potential of Wordpress, then you will have to seriously consider purchasing your own domain name and getting it hosted with a reputable hosting company. When purchasing a domain name, use a service like Go Daddy or Wcadomains.com as it is very inexpensive to get them here, and then all you have to do is point the DNS (Domain Name Servers) to where your hosting account is. I’ll do a video tutorial on that shortly, so stay tuned.

Once you have your domain name and changed the DNS settings, then you can log in to your Administration panel of your hosting account. For the purposes of this article, I am explaining how to do this with Cpanel, as this is by far the most popular admin panel being used. Again, I will give lessons about other hosting panels at another time.

Installing Wordpress On Cpanel

Once you have logged in to your Cpanel, you can scroll down to near the bottom of the page to the Software and Services category, and within there, you should be able to see an icon that looks like a smiley face that is called Fantastico De Luxe. Click on this icon and you will be taken to a new screen that is the Fantastico Control Panel.

In the Fantastico Control Panel you will be presented with navigational buttons down the left hand side, and under the title of Blogs, there is a Wordpress option and you can click this link. Now we are presented with your Wordpress options in the main area of the screen and it is here we begin to install Wordpress on a Cpanel Server.Install Wordpress On Cpanel

There will be a link that says New Installation, and there will generally be some other information next to it, such as the version of Wordpress it will be, and also how much disk space is required and available. We want to press this New Installation link, and we will now be taken to a page where we can enter in our specific options.

The first option given is under what domain you want it installed. Many hosting panels allow you to have more than one domain on your account, so you can specify here. Now you get to choose where to install this copy of Wordpress. Do you want it in the root directory (www.yourdomain.com) or do you have a static site as your root directory and want to put a blog along side it (www.yourdomain.com/blog/) so you can keep using your static site?

Next up you will need to put in your preferred Administrator username and also your desired password to log in to your Wordpress Admin panel. After this you can supply your Admin nickname and also insert your email address. The last two options are to put in your site name, and also a description of your site. These can be changed later, so don’t worry too much about this part for now.

The final steps to Install Wordpress on a Cpanel Server is just to hit the Install Wordpress button, and in the next screen you will be shown a final button to press to complete the installation. You will now be advised that installation has been successful and you can log in to your Wordpress Admin panel by simply typing in to the address bar of a Web browser, http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin Punch in your details that you used earlier. What you will have will be your Wordpress dashboard for you to go and create your online masterpiece.

Buying a domain name and changing the dns settings to point to your hosting provider is something that lots of tutotials don’t mention.
I’m about to start my wordpress site from scratch so I found this article very helpful.
